There is a Papago Park near the Phoenix Zoo

Papago Park

Do you want easy access to the airport and great outdoor recreation? Experience the red butte formations of Papago Park, including the famous Hole-in-the-Rock Trail; fish in seven acres of stocked lagoons; or play a round at Papago Golf Course; or visit Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Garden.

Phoenix's Papago Park has played many roles in its history: it has been a reservation for indigenous tribes, a fish hatchery, a POW camp, and a VA hospitals. It currently houses The Phoenix Zoo, Desert Botanical Garden, golf courses, several museums, baseball fields, lakes, and animals and plants of the Sonoran Desert.

TRAIL DESCRIPTIONS TRAIL MAP

A typical Phoenix Papago Park trail features little elevation change and is suitable for walking, hiking, mountain biking, and trail running. It is divided between the east and west sides by Galvin Parkway.

WEST SIDE TRAILS

There are accessible, paved paths along with trails and loops around Big Butte and Small Butte. For an in-depth experience of the park, take a trek along the 23-mile Double Butte Loop. There is a drinking fountain, a bike rack and a picnic ramada in the Papago Park Drive parking lot, but no restrooms.

Parking areas and roads are open from sunrise to sunset or 7 p.m., whichever comes first, but trails remain open until 11 p.m.

EAST SIDE TRAILS

One of Phoenix's top hikes and the park's most popular scenic viewpoint, Hole-in-the-Rock, includes an interpretive nature trail to learn about Sonoran Desert flora and fauna. A picnic ramada, drinking fountains, and restrooms are available on this side.

Roads and parking are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., but trails are open until 11 p.m.

HOLE-IN-THE-ROCK TRAIL

User yuanbinyu posted this photo with the caption: Tighten up on your reins. Your horses are running wild.

It looks out over nearby lagoons and the distant downtown skyline, making it a great viewing spot (especially at sunset). One tenth of a mile brings you to the chamber on a series of steps that rise 200 feet. It is believed that the Hohokam civilization used this formation to track the position of the sun through a hole in the rock ceiling.

Distance: 03 miles

Located at 625 N. Galvin Parkway, Phoenix, the trailhead is in the parking lot. In the event that parking is not available, there are plenty of other parking lots nearby.

There are a lot of people, spectacular views of downtown Phoenix and Tempe, and incredible sandstone formations, so be prepared for crowds. There is no restriction on dogs on the trail.

GOVERNOR HUNT'S TOMB

A different view of Hunt's Tomb from the photo I shared last month. Photo by user zachcooleyphoto. I'll add that post to my story if you missed it. The Arizona governor is entombed there, so it's quite an interesting story. All the best for the weekend!

On a hill, a white pyramid stands as a memorial to Arizona's first governor, George W.P. Hunt. A tomb was built for Hunt's wife in 1931, and he was also buried there after his death in 1934. Other family members were also buried there. A short walk up the mountain will provide you with an unparalleled view of the area, including Hole-in-the-Rock, the Phoenix Zoo, and the eastern part of Greater Phoenix.

Desert Botanical Garden

While I have found so much closure, so many wounds remain open and will continue to be.

Despite all of life's impossible things, this trip taught me that beauty can still be found between evil and cruelty, if one is willing to seek it out.

Despite all odds, hope exists and will always exist.

My weekend could easily be spent exploring the Desert Botanical Gardn in Phoeniex! We are home to thousands of cacti, trees, and flowers on more than 55 acres at dbgphx! The desert isn't just dirt and tumbleweeds

Take advantage of the Las Noches de las Luminarias at the Desert Botanical Garden this winter if you're planning a getaway to Arizona! As part of this Christmas tradition, events will be held throughout December. Live Christmas music will accompany the lighting of thousands of candles on the desert trails

This photo was taken by raemstaylor, and the caption reads: Today I am 29 years old. As a result of living life, I have basked in it. My mistakes taught me something. As a person, I didn't just grow, I evolved as well. It is my prayer that I will fulfill the purpose God has for me, be a blessing to others, and enjoy the journey

After a long time away from my last road trip, I was eager to visit my neighbor to the east, Arizona. San Diego to downtown Phoenix took us only seven hours (with breaks).

Visit the top attractions within the park boundaries to make it an enjoyable day. Check out the Sonoran Desert's vast variety of plants at the Desert Botanical Garden; visit all sorts of animals at the Phoenix Zoo; learn more about the state's history at the Arizona Heritage Center; tee off at the Papago Golf Club; or enjoy some family fun at the Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting.
