HISTORICAL INFORMATION
In the early 1860s, Phoenix was founded on the Salt River banks.
Phoenix is named after one of its first settlers, Cambridge-educated pioneer Darrell Duppa, who predicted that a great city would arise from the ancient Hohokam ruins like the legendary bird that rose from its own ashes.
Among Arizona's 22 sovereign American Indian tribes, 22 are sovereign.
In Phoenix's early days, the Hohokam Indians lived there. A record of the Hohokam tribe does not exist after 1450 A.D., although they are considered ancestors of the Pima. Hohokam is a word used in the Pima language to describe those who have passed away.
The Yavapai County Board of Supervisors formed Phoenix's first election precinct on May 4, 1868.
In 1912, the first governor of Arizona was elected, George W. P. Hunt.
